The movie is based on a series of volumes written by British author Clive Barker, with each volume containing roughly five horror stories. Barker’s tales are bleak, fantastical and humorous.
Some of them have been adapted into movies such as The Midnight Meat Train, which I really liked; The Last Illusion; and Candyman, to mention but a few. The Hulu adaptation, which Seth MacFarlane (The Orville) executive-produced, won’t feature any of the stories that viewers have encountered in other adaptations.
Rather, it will follow the exploits of Mary, a beautiful psychologist that spends her days debunking supernatural beliefs and theories. When her young son dies, a handsome and charismatic young man named Simon tells her that he can speak to the dead child. Books of the Dead debuts on October 7 on Hulu.
