Ivory Coast’s Unbelievable Journey to AFCON Victory

Date:

Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae celebrated his team’s remarkable journey as “miracle survivors” after the host country achieved one of the most extraordinary turnarounds in major tournament history, securing victory in the Africa Cup of Nations by defeating Nigeria 2-1 in Sunday’s final.

Expressing his disbelief, Fae stated, “It is more than a fairytale. I am struggling to take it all in,” following Ivory Coast’s comeback from behind at half-time at the Ebimpe Olympic Stadium, ultimately winning thanks to goals by Franck Kessie and Sebastien Haller.

Fae emphasized the team’s resilience, noting, “When I think about all we have been through, we are miracle survivors. We never gave up and managed to come back from so many tough blows.” The official attendance of over 57,000 in Abidjan witnessed the Elephants clinching their third continental title.

Despite facing early setbacks, including losses to Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast, as the host country, made history by becoming the first to win the Cup of Nations since Egypt in 2006. Their remarkable journey included a narrow escape from the group stage, overcoming hurdles with Fae taking over as coach on an interim basis.

The knockout stages saw Ivory Coast’s triumphant path, defeating Senegal on penalties in the last 16, securing a 2-1 victory against Mali in the quarter-finals, and overcoming the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 in the semi-finals. The team’s ability to rally from behind showcased their physical and mental resilience.

Reflecting on the unpredictable turn of events, Fae, who assumed coaching duties on his 40th birthday, expressed immense joy: “I can’t properly express my joy. It is massive. I dreamed of winning the AFCON as a player and didn’t manage it. Now I have had the opportunity as a coach, albeit in strange circumstances.”

The tournament also highlighted the remarkable story of Sebastien Haller, the Borussia Dortmund striker, scoring crucial goals in the semi-final and final. Haller, who faced an ankle injury, played a pivotal role in Ivory Coast’s success. His moments of triumph, including the clinching goal in the final, left an emotional impact on the team and the nation.

In an emotional interview, Haller shared, “We dreamt of this moment so many times. These scenes of joy, the country deserves this too. We kept believing until the end. My teammates pushed me to stay on the pitch for as long as possible, and thanks to them, I scored.” Despite his ankle injury, Haller’s dedication and contribution to the team’s victory showcased the spirit of Ivory Coast’s triumph.
