Joint Forces Rescue 19 Individuals from ADF Terrorists, Restoring Peace to Eastern DR Congo

Date:

The joint efforts of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) led to the successful rescue of 19 individuals from the clutches of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) terrorists. The mission, carried out with precision and dedication, underscores the commitment of both nations to combat terrorism and restore stability to the region.

The group of rescued individuals, comprising eight children, nine women, and two men, were brought to safety after the joint forces launched an offensive against an ADF position at Tingwe Hills, located to the northeast of Erengeti Town. Their courageous escape from captivity led them to the joint base at Bwakadde in Ituri province, where they reported their ordeal.

The collaboration between the UPDF and FARDC played a vital role in this operation, demonstrating the power of nations uniting against a common threat. The rescued individuals were swiftly airlifted by the UPDF to the Mountain Division headquarters in Muhooti, where they are currently receiving essential medical treatment and care. Among the rescued women was a mother who had recently given birth and had been abandoned in the wilderness by her companions due to her inability to keep up with the group’s pace. Thanks to the swift response of a combined UPDF/FARDC squad, both the mother and her baby are now in stable condition, a heartwarming testament to the compassion and determination of the rescuers.

During the operation, the joint forces managed to recover a firearm and neutralize an ADF fighter in a crossfire exchange. The relentless pursuit of the terrorists continues as the joint forces under Sector 3 Makindye battalion diligently track their movements, determined to bring lasting security to the region.

Major General Dick Olum, the commander of Operation Shuuja, provided insightful statistics on the impact of the ongoing operation. Since its inception on November 31, 2021, a total of 548 ADF rebels have been eliminated, 50 captured, and 31 willingly surrendered. These numbers reflect the unyielding dedication of the forces to rid the region of terror and violence.

Over the weekend, a visit by Lt. Gen. Kayanja Muhanga, Commander of Land Forces, Col. Amuri Joseph, the commander of FARDC in the Ituri area, and Maj. Gen. Dick Olum to the joint forces in eastern DR Congo marked a significant gesture of appreciation and solidarity. Local chiefs, including Chief Boga and Omukama Tabaro Kato Kabuga II, expressed their gratitude for the successful operation, which enabled the return of displaced Bannyamboga residents to their homes after years of turmoil.

Chief Tchabi, represented by Babanilau Tchabi Etienne, conveyed heartfelt appreciation to Presidents Felix Tshisekedi of DRC and Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda for their unwavering commitment to combating the ADF menace. The once-crowded IDP camp, which sheltered 12,000 people, now stands empty as residents have returned to their homes in locations like Tondoli, Vukeka, Malibongo, and Bukedi, signaling a new era of peace and hope for the region.

The joint operation stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, compassion, and determination, reflecting the shared commitment of two nations to secure the future and well-being of their people.
