Medipal International Hospital, a prestigious private healthcare facility in Kampala, has been forced to shut down due to its failure to settle its rent arrears. The hospital, located in a building owned by Tembo Steels, received a “notice to vacate premises” on Tuesday. The notice, authored by Manish Kalia, the General Manager of Tembo Steels, referenced multiple reminders and meetings where Medipal had promised to clear its outstanding rent obligations, which amounted to $365,557 (over Shs1bn).
The notice stated that Medipal had until September 30, 2022, to pay off the rent arrears and should prepare to vacate the building by December 31, 2022. Despite receiving these notices, Medipal continued to operate from the premises, accumulating further rent arrears. As a result, Tembo Steels decided to lock up the hospital located in Kololo.
When contacted for a response, a manager at Medipal, identified only as Ephraim, acknowledged the ongoing issue but mentioned that they were still receiving patients.
Medipal gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic for its high prices in treating patients affected by the virus. The hospital attracted high-profile individuals from the government, business community, and military due to its reputation for superior medical services.
In June 2021, Medipal Hospital received significant attention for its handling of General Katumba Wamala, who had been targeted in an assassination attempt by unknown gunmen. The attack resulted in the death of his daughter Brenda Nantongo and his driver Haruna Kayondo.
