Motorist, Passenger Electrocuted by Loose Power Cable

The two were riding to Amber coat food market when they were killed by a loose electric cable. Edisa Nabukenya, who survived with serious injuries, says she saw the wire drop on the motorcycle, which was approximately one meter ahead of her.

A Boda boda rider and his passenger were electrocuted this morning along Tobacco road in Walukuba-Masese division in Jinja district. The rider has been identified as Swaibu Mugenyi and the passenger is Juliet Auma.

The two were riding to Amber coat food market when they were killed by a loose electric cable. Edisa Nabukenya, who survived with serious injuries, says she saw the wire drop on the motorcycle, which was approximately one meter ahead of her.

“The motorist bypassed me on my way to Jinja central market. But in less than a minute, electric wires fell on the motorcycle and I immediately saw a heavy force pushing me away,” she said. Sylvia Maddu, a vendor from Masese landing site, says that they have severally tried to engage responsible authorities to replace old poles in vain.

Cue out…Leero,”.

UMEME officials declined to comment, saying they were still investigating the incident. However, one of the workers told URN that the said wires were weakened after being vandalised on Monday night.     “These wires were vandalised early this week. We delayed to replace them due to frequent rains and pressure from some industrialists who insisted that, we can only conduct our works over the weekend when their factories are not busy,” he said.

Mohammed Ssebuliba, the Officer in charge of Walukuba police station, says investigations are underway. He says the deceased’s bodies were handed over to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem.
