Ham Launches Nakivubo Channel Cleanup for Upcoming Redevelopment

Nakivubo Channel Redevelopment: The Start of a Transformative Project

Nakivubo channel redevelopment has begun. Businessman Hamis Kiggundu, known as Ham, started a large cleanup operation in the downstream section of the Nakivubo drainage channel. The aim is to remove accumulated debris, waste, and sediment. This cleanup will prepare the area for future construction. The project will modernize the channel and its surroundings. Ham and his team are kicking off the transformation of one of Kampala’s vital drainage systems.

A Strategic First Step in Urban Renewal

The Nakivubo drainage channel has faced years of pollution, flooding, and poor sanitation. The current cleanup involves heavy machinery, trucks, and manual labor. This operation addresses these long-standing issues. It is part of a larger effort to upgrade the channel into a modern, functional infrastructure. The goal is to improve flood control and sanitation in downtown Kampala.

“The Nakivubo channel redevelopment is not just about cleaning the area,” Ham said at the site. “It’s about creating a solid foundation for sustainable urban development that will benefit the city for years to come.”

The team is removing heaps of waste and sediment, including dredging parts of the channel. This will ensure the upcoming construction work can proceed smoothly.

The Bigger Picture: A Modernized Infrastructure

Ham’s vision extends beyond just cleaning the channel. Once the cleanup is done, construction will begin. The plan includes covering the drainage system, adding service lanes, and installing water filtration chambers. The goal is to improve the channel’s functionality and add commercial infrastructure above it. This will help both the local economy and the aesthetic appeal of the area.

This project is part of Ham’s larger efforts, which also include redeveloping the Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium. By modernizing the Nakivubo channel, he aims to create a cleaner, more sustainable environment that supports urban growth and flood resilience.

As the cleanup progresses, residents and stakeholders are hopeful that the project will bring significant benefits. The modernized Nakivubo channel will provide better drainage and flood control. It will also pave the way for future commercial development, boosting the city’s economy.

The infrastructure upgrades will improve sanitation and water quality, addressing long-standing public health concerns.
