Police to train officers on handling Covid-19 suspects

Date:

Following the upsurge of Covid-19 cases in detention facilities, police has embarked on training its officers on the different aspects of preventing the virus especially when it comes to handling and detaining suspects at police stations.

This comes after the temporary closure of Kawempe Police Station in Kampala after one of the suspects, a male teen of 15 years who had been arrested on allegations of defiling a three-year-old girl was found positive of the virus.

The case has also brought into focus the safety of juvenile offenders in the country’s remand homes.

According to Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, congestion in police cells is a big threat to the fight against the pandemic but the force is working hard to ensure the safety of all suspects in detention.

Onyango noted that the police is taking necessary steps to ensure that Covid-19 control measures are put in place to prevent the spread of the virus.

“Our directorate of medical services has provided us with Personal Protective Equipment. They have provided all police stations and cells with sanitisers, water tanks among others,”he said.

Some of the preventive measures put in place to prevent the spread of the virus at different police stations include; suspension of visits in all remand homes, limiting access to police stations among others.

The force appealed to members of the public to always follow ministry of Health guidelines on curbing the spread of Covid-19 so that the virus is kicked out of the country.
