Archbishop Ssemogerere assumed the role of Archbishop of Kampala in December 2021, succeeding the late Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, who passed away unexpectedly in April 2021. Since his appointment, the Archbishop has faced numerous challenges, prompting his request for an auxiliary Bishop to assist him.
Insiders at the Archbishop’s residence in Lubaga reveal that he has been tirelessly working to reorganize the financial system of the Archdiocese, which his predecessor had centralized to a significant extent. This restructuring is aimed at ensuring greater transparency and accountability within the Archdiocese’s financial operations.
Additionally, Archbishop Ssemogerere has been actively engaged in reorganizing the clergy under his leadership. As a result, he has focused on smaller-scale reshuffles of parish priests rather than undertaking a massive reassignment process. This meticulous approach indicates his commitment to carefully aligning the clergy with the Archdiocese’s vision and goals.
The potential candidates for the role of auxiliary Bishop are expected to be drawn from a pool of priests within the Kampala Archdiocese. However, it is also possible for the Pope to select a candidate from another diocese, as was the case with the recent appointment of Msgr. Lawrence Mukasa from Kiyinda Mityana diocese as the new bishop of Kasana-Luweero.
