Pupil Dies, Eight Hospitalized After Suspected Food Poisoning at Luuka School

A suspected food poisoning incident at Telik Junior School in Luuka District has resulted in one pupil’s death and eight others receiving medical care. Police are investigating the case that left several students seriously ill.

On November 14, 2025, the tragedy unfolded when a Primary Two pupil, Namugogo Sharifah, shared food brought from home with classmates. After eating, several children fell ill, experiencing severe vomiting and diarrhea. Authorities rushed them to Kiyunga Health Centre IV for treatment.

Details of the Incident

Busoga North Police Spokesperson Samson Lubega confirmed the incident and explained that the food-sharing event led to the illness. Shortly after the children ate, they developed symptoms of food poisoning, and some needed immediate medical attention. Sadly, Namugogo Sharifah passed away after being transported to Kiyunga Hospital Mortuary.

Authorities have now launched an investigation and ordered a postmortem to confirm the exact cause of death.

Investigation and Arrests

Police arrested two individuals associated with the school’s management to help with the investigation. These arrests aim to identify the substance responsible for the food poisoning. Scene of Crime Officers, alongside medical experts, are working to uncover how the incident occurred and who may be responsible.

“We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and urge the public to remain calm as we conduct a thorough investigation,” said SSP Samson Lubega.
