Putin Declares Temporary Ceasefire in Ukraine Amid Critical Peace Talks

Date:

Russian President Vladimir Putin announces a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine. The ceasefire will run from the morning of May 8 to May 11, aligning with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations that mark the end of World War Two.

The Kremlin stated that Putin declared the ceasefire “based on humanitarian considerations.” Russia urged Ukraine to respect the truce and warned it would respond swiftly to any violations. “Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example,” the statement said.

So far, Ukraine has not responded publicly.

This move by Putin comes at a crucial time for negotiations. The United States has described this week as “very critical” for Russia-Ukraine peace talks. Washington is pushing hard for progress, but frustration is growing. President Donald Trump recently warned that the U.S. might step back from mediation efforts if talks stall.

Putin announces temporary ceasefire in Ukraine partly to show that Russia is serious about peace talks. Analysts believe he wants to impress international audiences, especially the U.S. administration. However, the history of failed ceasefires casts doubt. Over 20 ceasefire attempts have collapsed since the conflict began, some within minutes.

The most recent truce, over Easter, lasted only 30 hours and led to minor reductions in fighting. Both sides accused each other of breaking the agreement.

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched on February 24, 2022, has devastated the region. Moscow now controls about 20% of Ukrainian territory, including Crimea, which it annexed in 2014. The war has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths and injuries, affecting soldiers and civilians alike.

With international pressure mounting, this temporary ceasefire tests both sides’ willingness to seek lasting peace. The world will watch closely to see if the truce holds or becomes another failed attempt.
