Rajiv Ruparelia Funeral: Kampala Unites in Citywide Tribute

Date:

Thousands of people gathered across Kampala to honor the late businessman during the Rajiv Ruparelia funeral. His tragic death over the weekend stunned the nation. As the city came to a standstill, Ugandans reflected on his humility, generosity, and leadership.

The farewell began with a citywide procession. Starting from his home in Kololo, Rajiv’s body traveled through major roads, including John Babiha Avenue, Kira Road, and Jinja Road. Onlookers lined the streets, some silently praying while others filmed the emotional moment. Clearly, his influence extended beyond business.

Earlier in the day, mourners arrived at the Ruparelia family home. Friends, family, local leaders, and dignitaries came dressed in white—a Hindu symbol of mourning. Many wore shirts bearing Rajiv’s image, a clear sign of the deep connection they felt.

At 2:00 PM, the convoy departed the residence. Only the hearse and one flower car appeared in black. The rest of the vehicles were white, symbolizing peace and reverence. Athletes, youth leaders, and business professionals joined the journey, which made its way to the Lugogo Cremation Centre.

Upon arrival, Hindu funeral rites began. In a deeply emotional moment, Sudhir Ruparelia lit his son’s funeral pyre. The crowd watched in silence, many visibly moved. This personal farewell struck a chord with everyone present.

Throughout the Rajiv Ruparelia funeral, speakers emphasized his character. They described him as compassionate, selfless, and deeply committed to giving back. Despite his wealth, he remained approachable and grounded—traits not often seen in business leaders.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, representing President Museveni, delivered a heartfelt message. She praised the Ruparelia family’s contribution to Uganda’s economy. Moreover, she acknowledged their resilience following the 1972 expulsion of Asians under Idi Amin.

“The Ruparelia family has created a legacy that will uplift future generations,” she stated. She also announced a condolence package of UGX 50 million from the President.

Without a doubt, the Rajiv Ruparelia funeral united people across backgrounds and beliefs. It became more than a ceremony—it was a celebration of a life marked by service, leadership, and integrity. His vision continues to inspire Uganda’s youth and business community.

As the flames of the funeral pyre rose, so did the commitment of many to carry his work forward. His legacy, undoubtedly, lives on.
