Suicide is a growing problem in Uganda and the numbers tell a shocking story.
A recent Police report indicates that 275 suicide cases were registered from January to June compared to last year’s 224 cases in the same period. This translates to a 22.7% increase in cases.
The same report indicates that the cases were registered in different parts of the country with Lwengo district recording the highest number of cases at 16, followed by Rukungiri and Tororo with 12 cases each. Nakaseke recorded 11 and Maracha had 9 suicide cases. The victims were aged between 17 and 48.
However, mental health experts argue that suicide figures could be much higher than what is reflected, particularly because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic hardships and its attendant economic hardships.
