Three people lost their lives in a tragic Busoga train collision on December 6, 2025, when a taxi was struck by a train at Butongole along Tirinyi Road. The crash occurred at approximately 2:50 pm, involving a motor vehicle with registration number UBN 282J.
Police in Busoga East have identified the deceased as 29-year-old Kyaze Henry of Kasawo, Mukono; two-year-old Imran Luwangula from Bulangira, Luuka District; and 40-year-old Florence Nakamya of Mutakole, Butebo District. Authorities confirm that two additional bodies remain unidentified as investigations continue.
Emergency responders rushed several survivors to Iganga General Hospital with various injuries. Among them are 30-year-old Zaituna Katoko and five-year-old Hasahya Grace, both from Luuka and Butalejja respectively. Others receiving treatment include Christine Nakirya, 40, from Butalejja; Richard Osizi, 34, and Henry Kissa, 48, both from Sironko District; and Fred Isooba, 49, from Iganga.
Also injured are Jackline Namulinda, 25, of Bugweri; six-year-old Precious Ashaba from Mukono; seven-year-old Noela Mirembe; and two-year-old Blessing Aaron, both from Kabembe in Mukono.
Police said they are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. Preliminary reports suggest the incident occurred at an unprotected or poorly marked railway crossing—a recurring concern in rural Uganda.
The Busoga train collision has reignited public calls for improved safety at train intersections. Authorities now urge all motorists to slow down, stop, and look both ways before crossing railway tracks. They also emphasize the need for better signage, warning signals, and physical barriers at high-risk crossings.
This accident highlights the dangers posed by unsecured rail crossings, especially in areas with heavy commuter traffic. Community leaders and road safety advocates are pushing for urgent infrastructure upgrades to prevent future tragedies.
