Ambassador Popp previously served as the U.S. Ambassador to Guatemala from 2020 to 2023, where he undoubtedly left his mark on U.S.-Guatemalan relations. His tenure was characterized by active engagement and a commitment to strengthening bilateral ties.

Before his assignment in Guatemala, Popp played a pivotal role as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Mission in Brazil, where he also assumed the role of Chargé d’Affaires a.i. from 2018 to 2020. His deep knowledge of the region and diplomatic acumen contributed to the maintenance of a strong partnership between the United States and Brazil during his tenure.

Popp’s impressive resume extends further, encompassing roles such as Political Counselor and Acting Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Kenya from 2015 to 2017. He was also at the helm of the Office of Regional Economic Policy and Summit Coordination in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs of the State Department during the 2015 Summit of the Americas.

In recognition of his dedication and leadership, Ambassador Popp was selected for Senior Leadership Training and earned an M.S. in National Security Strategy at the National War College in Washington, D.C., from 2012–2013.
