Major Blow to ADF Rebel Group as Top Commander “Fazul” is Neutralized by Joint Ugandan and Congolese Forces

Date:

In the ongoing Operation Shujaa, a joint effort between the Ugandan Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), a top commander of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group has been eliminated. The ADF commander, known by the alias “Fazul,” met his end in a fierce confrontation with the joint forces in the Mwalika Valley of DR Congo’s North Kivu Province.

The operation, which has been ongoing since its commencement, marked a major breakthrough with the neutralization of Fazul, a Tanzanian national who had been a thorn in the side of regional security for years. The UPDF’s Mountain Division and Operation Shujaa spokesperson, Major Bilal Katamba, confirmed the successful operation, highlighting that alongside Fazul, another ADF fighter was also taken down during the intense engagement.

The combined efforts of the UPDF and FARDC have displayed remarkable coordination and effectiveness in targeting key ADF strongholds. Notably, on August 23, 2023, the joint forces executed an operation near Kanana and Makisabo in the North Kivu Province. Two additional ADF militants were neutralized in this operation, and the recovering team seized two submachine guns, four magazines, 84 rounds of ammunition, and a military radio.

This recent triumph builds upon the cooperation established in 2021 when Ugandan troops joined forces with the Congolese military to combat the notorious ADF rebel group that has long plagued the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since the launch of Operation Shujaa, the joint forces have relentlessly pursued ADF militants deep within the jungles, achieving commendable success in quelling the rebellion.

With nearly 600 ADF rebels eliminated and several hostages rescued since the initiation of Operation Shujaa, the UPDF, and FARDC underscored their commitment to restoring peace and security to the region. The joint forces issued an appeal to the remaining militants to surrender, emphasizing the existing amnesty offered by the Ugandan government to those who choose to abandon the path of rebellion.

The neutralization of Fazul, a high-ranking ADF commander, has delivered a substantial blow to the rebel group’s leadership structure. Security analysts believe that this operation will likely disrupt the ADF’s operational capabilities and serve as a deterrent to others who might consider joining their ranks.

As the joint forces continue their determined pursuit of the remaining ADF insurgents, the region holds its breath in anticipation of the restoration of long-awaited tranquility and stability.
