Former Rubaga South Member of Parliament, Kato Lubwama, has tragically passed away at a medical facility in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The news of Lubwama’s death was first announced by his business associate and events promoter, Andrew Mukasa, popularly known as Bajjo Events. According to reports, Lubwama succumbed to complications arising from his long-standing heart condition on June 7 at Stana Medical Centre in Bunamwaya.
Lubwama initially gained fame as an actor and playwright in the 1990s. He was the founder of Diamonds Ensemble, a theater company that played a pivotal role in reviving the art-form in Uganda. However, as interest in theater declined in the 2000s, Lubwama made a transition to the nascent FM radio medium, where he gained further popularity through his work on CBS FM Kalisoliso program. His partnership with fellow actors Abby Mukiibi and Patricko Mujjuka on the morning show made it one of the most listened to in Uganda, and Lubwama became known by his performance name, Bisso.
In a surprising career move, Lubwama entered politics and was elected as the Member of Parliament for Rubaga South in 2016. He gained attention for his blunt statement when asked about his lack of vocal presence in parliament, stating, “I came to eat.” This remark implied that his main motivation for seeking a parliamentary seat was to advance his business interests rather than serving his constituents. Lubwama lost his seat in 2021.
Following his exit from parliament, Lubwama focused on re-establishing himself in the entertainment industry. He founded B24 TV, started a YouTube channel, and made regular appearances on digital platforms, notably on NBS TV’s UnKut and Kasuku shows.
Unapologetic about his lackluster parliamentary record, Lubwama attributed the abrupt end of his political career to the “lies” spread by his political rivals in the National Unity Platform, led by fellow artiste Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. He dismissed any regrets about leaving parliament, emphasizing that it allowed him to return to his private businesses, including his involvement in maize flour trade.
At the time of his passing, Lubwama was 52 years old. Born on August 16, 1970, he had a twin brother named Isaac Wasswa, who also passed away several years ago. Lubwama’s death marks the end of a multifaceted career that encompassed acting, radio, politics, and a return to the entertainment industry
