Police Recover Stolen Phones and Apprehend Suspects in Kampala

Date:

In a commendable display of coordinated efforts, the Kampala police have successfully recovered a multitude of stolen items, including several phones, which were reported stolen during the Vumbula Uganda Festival held in Jinja over the weekend. The recovery operation was carried out jointly by the Cyber Unit, Forensic Directorate, Crime Intelligence Directorate, and Flying Squad Unit, following intelligence-led efforts.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy police spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, provided details of the operation. Two suspects, identified as Nuwamanya Julius, also known as Nsubuga James, aged 20, and Kisakye Mark, aged 20, both residents of Kyebando Central Zone in Kampala District, were apprehended during the raid. Nuwamanya Julius works as a technician, while Kisakye Mark is self-employed.

During the operation conducted in Kyebando Central Zone, the police successfully recovered a range of stolen items. The seized items included 12 iPhones, three Samsung phones, one Itel phone, a Nokia phone, a power bank, three national IDs, a passport under the name of Judith Kyarimpa, an identity card also belonging to Judith Kyarimpa, eight MTN SIM cards, 13 Airtel SIM cards, three Lycamobile SIM cards, three damaged hard disks, and a laptop.

The recovered items were exhibited and attached to the case file, which pertains to the possession of stolen goods. Statements obtained during the investigation were also included as evidence. According to police findings, the majority of the recovered mobile phones were in a second-hand condition, with some displaying cracked screens and covers. Notably, the iPhones lacked SIM cards, and several of them still had visible photos of their rightful owners on the screens.

The swift recovery of the stolen items demonstrates the dedication and effectiveness of the police force in Kampala. The joint operation involving multiple specialized units highlights the importance of intelligence-led efforts in combating criminal activities. The police’s success in apprehending the suspects and recovering the stolen phones brings a sense of relief to the victims of the thefts and reinforces the commitment of law enforcement agencies to maintain public safety and security in the region.
