The department of women and youth affairs at Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) will on Friday hold the first ever Muslim Women’s Day event aimed at making Muslim families stable both financially and spiritually.
The statement from UMSC spokesperson, Hajj Nsereko Mutumba, said the event will be held at the UMSC headquarters in Old Kampala under the theme, “A call for stable Muslim families”.
UMSC secretary for women and youth affairs, Sheikhat Radhiyah Namakula, noted that a stable family is a family that is well fed, well educated, healthy, God fearing and free from domestic violence.
She said that the primary causes of domestic violence are poverty and ignorance.
“Once poverty and ignorance are addressed, incidents of domestic violence will drastically go down,” she said.
She said the UMSC Women Savings and credit Cooperative Societies (SACCO) is one of the projects that her office is going to front as counter measures to poverty and ignorance in Muslim families.
She also spoke about plans to come up with a Muslim Women Data base detailing the numbers, age groups, levels of education and regional balance, among others.
To achieve all the above, Namakula said her office will work with various stakeholders like the government line ministries, local and international non-governmental organizations as well as all the concerned citizens.
Besides launching various programs, Namakula said the event will also be used to celebrate the achievements of Muslim women under UMSC.
She said that for the first time, UMSC has a full women’s department with full representation on the UMSC management committee.
She thanked the Mufti of Uganda Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje for championing this and other Muslim women empowerment programs.
