Uproar in Buikwe: Ex-MP’s LGBTQ Stance Ignites Fury, Forcing Hasty Retreat

Date:

In a shocking turn of events that has set tongues wagging across Uganda, former MP Ibrahim Muwulize found himself at the center of a firestorm in Buikwe town. What began as a routine ceremony quickly descended into chaos as Muwulize dared to challenge one of the nation’s most controversial laws. His impassioned defense of LGBTQ rights not only silenced the crowd but also led to his dramatic expulsion from the event. As the dust settles, Ugandans are left grappling with a burning question: Is this a glimpse of changing attitudes, or a stark reminder of the deep divisions that continue to shape the country’s social landscape?

Former MP Ibrahim Muwulize stirred controversy at a Buikwe town ceremony on June 4, 2023, when his support for LGBTQ rights led to his abrupt departure from the event. As the guest of honor, Muwulize used his speech to criticize Uganda’s newly enacted Anti-Homosexuality Bill, advocating for equal rights regardless of sexual orientation. His stance, however, was met with fierce opposition from the audience.

Muwulize’s suggestion that Uganda should emulate nations that respect LGBTQ rights ignited anger among attendees. Many accused him of betraying Ugandan values and succumbing to Western influence. “He’s forgotten his roots,” one attendee exclaimed, while another claimed Muwulize had been “brainwashed by Western countries.”

The atmosphere quickly became hostile as more people voiced their disapproval. Amid shouts and jeers, some demanded Muwulize’s immediate removal from the event. Organizers and security personnel swiftly escorted the former MP to his car, driving him away from the venue as the crowd continued to express their outrage.

An event organizer later expressed surprise at Muwulize’s controversial statements, saying, “This is not what our community stands for.” The incident highlights the deep-rooted divisions in Uganda over LGBTQ rights, underscoring the challenges faced by those advocating for equality in a society where such topics remain taboo.
